Dawnling

A cozy pixel-art alarm clock for iOS and Android. A little candle called Wick wakes up when you do, then walks you into your morning: no streaks, no guilt, and zero data collection.

Dawnling home room, alarm ring, and morning routine screens

Wick's room at sunrise, the alarm with type-to-wake, and a guided morning routine.

The Idea

Most alarm apps treat waking up as a problem to punish you out of: math puzzles, shame screens, streaks that collapse the one morning you sleep in. Dawnling goes the other way. Waking up should feel like someone is glad you did.

When your alarm rings, Wick the candle wakes up with you. Getting up earns dewdrops, dewdrops furnish Wick's little pixel room, and optional morning routines (yoga, journaling, a workout) ease you into the day. Miss a morning and nothing bad happens. There is no streak to lose, only a cumulative count of mornings that ever goes up.

Meet Wick

Every sprite in the app is hand-finished pixel art: Wick, the furniture, the room as it shifts from sunrise to golden hour to night. Wick sleeps when you sleep, stretches when you do yoga, and celebrates when you show up.

Design Principles

Three rules shaped every screen, and they are non-negotiable:

  • Reliability first. An alarm app has one job. On iOS 26 Dawnling uses Apple's AlarmKit so the alarm rings through silent mode and Focus; older devices get a carefully engineered notification path, down to iOS 17.
  • No dark patterns. No streaks, no guilt copy, no countdowns, no loot boxes, no ads. The gentle substitute for a streak is a mornings count that only ever goes up.
  • Zero data collection. The app makes no network requests at all, and that is verified rather than assumed. No analytics SDK, no accounts, nothing leaves the device. The Android build ships without the INTERNET permission entirely.

The inventory, the shop, and the celebration when you get up. Dewdrops are earned by waking up, never bought.

Building It

Dawnling is two native apps built solo: SwiftUI on iOS and Kotlin Compose on Android, kept in feature parity with iOS as the source of truth. The sprite renderer, the time-of-day ambience, home screen widgets, and the alarm engine are all custom.

It also went through a full accessibility pass: VoiceOver labels for everything that matters, Reduce Motion support, Dynamic Type, and contrast checks. A cozy app that only works for some people is not cozy.

Where It Stands

As of September 2026, Dawnling is pre-launch and moving. The iOS app is feature-complete and in on-device testing, the Android port is in closed testing on Google Play, and the marketing site at dawnling.app is live. Launch will come when it is ready rather than on a date: the core app free forever, with optional furniture collections later. No subscription, no ads, ever.
